The initial design of the small bracket consisted on two plate, each 2 cm thick, one perpendicular to the bolt, the other parallel. After removing material where the stresses were particularly low, we noticed that the two plates seem to bending away from each other when under load (see figure). To alleviate this problem a cross-brace was added connecting the welds C and D. This new design concetrated the large stresses to the region surrounding the bolt hole. We could then concentrate our detailed FEM on thickening the plate with the bolt hole until the yield requirement was met. The resulting bracket is in figure ????.
