SYN Attack

• Complex attack, takes advantage of common parentage of most TCP/IP software

• A SYN packet is how a TCP connection is opened

• The initiator sends a SYN to the server

• The server responds with a packet which contains both the SYN and ACK bits

• Connection is now “half open”
