Subject: Retirement of AppleTalk Routing on MITnet - TETHER

----------

Good Morning,

Information Systems is nearing completion of the retirement of Appletalk routing on MITnet project. Hopefully this is not the first notification you have received about this retirement effort, and this notification reaches all those concerned in adequate time. More information is available at:

http://mit.edu/network/appletalk

Several of the few remaining zones to retire are used to provide AppleTalk routing over Tether. On Sunday, February 2nd, IS will retire AppleTalk routing from the Tether service. If you are accustom to file sharing or printing via AppleTalk while connected to MITnet via Tether, please plan to access these servers and printers via TCP/IP in the next week or so. More information is available at:

In closing, if you have any questions or concerns about this retirement project, please feel free to contact or me.

Thanks,

Theresa

AppleTalk Routing Retirement update

Date: August 5th, 2002

To: MIT Community

From: Theresa M Regan

Subject: AppleTalk Routing Retirement update... NW16 and NW21

----------

Good Day,

In July 2002, Information Systems announced the retirement of AppleTalk Routing on MITnet for December 2002. This note is being sent to provide a brief update and to remind the Community of this project. The following website will be updated periodically and the Community is encouraged to review it for current information:

Since the July announcement, we have initiated several outreach efforts and will continue contacting Departments throughout the Fall to ensure awareness of this project and to offer any needed assistance. In the past month, we have...

For the next few weeks, we plan to eliminate routing on those few zones where we have confirmed that no one is presently relying on AppleTalk routing to meet their daily business needs. We have reached approval to eliminate routing on the following two zones for Sunday, August 11th: Zone-NW16 and Zone-NW21

We reached this agreement by observing no active use of the zones for filesharing or printing and contacting our IT colleagues in these Buildings. We have confirmed that AppleTalk routing is not needed within these zones and have conferred with Facilities, as well.

In an attempt to generate Community awareness and ensure that we have not overlooked anyone's input, we plan to post a one week's advance notice of any upcoming zone retirements to "3DOWN",

We would appreciate the Community reviewing "3DOWN" and the "Retirement of AppleTalk Routing on MITnet" websites from time-to-time. We are striving for a smooth transition and would appreciate assistance from our IT colleagues. If anyone in the Community is relying on AppleTalk routing on these zones (NW16, NW21), please contact us (appletalk@mit.edu) since we do not wish to disrupt any needed services.

In closing, if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns, please contact us, as well.

Regards,

Theresa

Announcement of the Appletalk Routing Retirement Effort
Date: July 17th, 2002

To: MIT Community

From: Theresa M Regan

Subject: AppleTalk Routing on MITnet Retirement

----------

Information Systems plans to phase out AppleTalk Routing on MITnet between now and December 31st, 2002. Disabling AppleTalk routing impacts members of the Community who rely on devices and/or services across subnets via AppleTalk. (At MIT, subnets generally correspond to physical buildings.)

In order to plan and implement the future of MITnet, it is necessary to replace aging network equipment and software. Today's network technology and new emerging network equipment is being developed without support for AppleTalk routing. Therefore, these efforts necessitate the discontinuation of all cross campus AppleTalk routing. All current AppleTalk applications that have cross campus audiences will need to migrate to TCP/IP based implementations to continue operation.

In preparing for this announcement and the project work ahead, Information Systems has crafted the following website:

The website highlights:

Information Systems encourages the MIT community to assess their use of applications requiring routed AppleTalk and to migrate to TCP/IP based applications and services wherever possible. Any questions or feedback on the retirement effort or the website, may be e-mail to:

Please assist us with communicating this information within our Community by forwarding this announcement to other interested colleagues and raising the topic at relevant meetings. During the next several months, we will provide periodic updates to IT-Partners and the Community, as well as, updates to the website.
