HP JetAdmin Problems

Network Operations staff have identified a serious problem with some Windows95 and WindowsNT system installations which include drivers for HP network printers.

Under certain circumstances, computers with this configuration problem which are connected to an ethernet will generate a high rate of broadcast packets on the network, seriously impacting network performance for all users of that network.

The following registry key must be edited:

		HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/
		   SOFTWARE/
		      Hewlett-Packard/
		         HP JetAdmin/
		            TCPIP/
		               No Subnet Search
and set to "1".

Thusfar, we have identified five laptop computers which were purchased in a package deal by students in the Sloan School of Management. We suspect the pre-installed software configuration may be at fault.

Acknowledgement: The Network Operations Group wish to thank Paul Hill for his lightning-fast help in tracking down the software source of this problem.

Note: if you previously downloaded the "hpfix.exe" patch application for this problem, please discard the application and recheck (or have someone "in the know" do it for you) the registry. We discovered the patch, while not doing any further harm, also did not fix the problem.
