MIT researchers have found that conditioning engineered heart tissue with electrical stimulation results in tissue that is similar to that found in an animal. These images show, left to right, engineered heart tissue that has not been conditioned with electrical stimulation; engineered heart tissue that has been conditioned for eight days, and native heart tissue. The top row shows one cellular structure key to heart tissue (intercalated discs); the bottom row another (sarcomeres). Image courtesy / Radisic |
