Cambridge carnival slated for Sunday

Round two of Cambridge's end-of-summer celebration is scheduled for this Sunday--and MIT is invited!

On Aug. 28, the 12th annual "Cambridge Carnival--A Caribbean Style Festival" will take center stage in its new location on Main Street between Kendall and Central squares. The city held its second annual "Salsa at Sunset" celebration last week.

This Sunday's festivities begin at noon in Kendall Square and will include two stages with live music, ethnic foods, arts and crafts, dancing, steel bands and activities for children. Most of the food vendors and children's activities will be in front of the Marriott Hotel.

At 12:30 p.m., a parade will start at the corner of Sidney and Pacific streets, ending at Main and Vassar around 1:30 p.m. The festival will end at 7 p.m.

During the festival, Main Street will be closed between Vassar and Wadsworth streets. Ames Street will be open from Memorial Drive, but traffic will not be allowed to cross Main Street. Access to the East lot will be available from the Ames Street entrance between buildings 66 and 68. All East campus parking facilities will be accessible from Memorial Drive during this time.

"The MIT Police and grounds department have been notified and are working hard to make certain the MIT community can continue normal Sunday activities. Of course MIT community members are welcome to attend," said Paul Parravano, MIT's co-director of government and community affairs.
