Two Machover compositions to premiere

Tod Machover, professor of media arts and sciences, will perform on keyboard in his new composition, "Another Life" (2006), for nine players and live electronics. Machover will create electronic sounds in real-time alongside the ensemble.

"Life" will receive its world premiere on Monday, March 27, by Collage New Music in Edward M. Pickman Concert Hall at the Longy School of Music. The concert will also include "danger garden" by MIT music and theater arts lecturer Curtis Hughes, Collage's 2005-2006 composer-in-residence. Free tickets are available for MIT students who present their valid student IDs at the door on the night of the concert.

A second new piece by Machover will premiere in April. The composer's acoustic work, "but not simpler," commissioned by the Ying Quartet, contains virtually no electronics. "It is always refreshing to step back from my technological explorations and concentrate only on the music. Composing acoustic pieces is also a way of reminding listeners that the music matters more to me - after all--than the means used to create or play it," Machover writes in the program.

"But not simpler" will receive its Boston premiere on April 13 at 8 p.m. in Harvard's Paine Concert Hall. The concert is free, but passes (available at the Harvard Box Office) are required.
