Department of Mechanical Engineering Head Mary Boyce describes Hosoi as “a superb teacher who has an uncanny ability to connect with students while challenging them to learn both the fundamental engineering concepts and the rigorous mathematics needed to solve real engineering problems. Her natural passion and pleasure for the subjects truly inspires and engages the students as evidenced by the uniformly high praise of any form of teaching evaluation on any subject [she] has taught, as well as the popularity of her student office hours.”
The Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching was established in 1989 by the School of Engineering to recognize outstanding contributions to undergraduate education by members of its faculty. The award stands as a tribute to one of the school’s finest teachers, Dr. Amar Bose, former professor of electrical engineering and computer science and founder of Bose Corporation. This award may be given annually and carries a cash prize of $8,000 made possible by a gift to MIT from Bose Corporation and the Bose Foundation.
