We all want a chance for our voices to be heard, especially when they can create a larger impact. One way we can make our opinions count is through the MIT Global Challenge’s Community Choice Vote. More than 45 teams have entered the inaugural year of the MIT Global Challenge, part of the MIT150 celebration to honor the role of public service at the Institute. These interdisciplinary groups of MIT students and their teammates have developed — over the past nine months — more than 45 innovative solutions for improving the lives of those in need across the globe.

The reach is wide

Teams are working on projects as diverse as developing sustainable agricultural models that empower subsistence farmers in the Niger Delta, bringing mobile technology to Indian universities as a vehicle for social entrepreneurship, and providing community-based solar energy in rural Africa. All are engaged in applying their skills beyond the borders of the classroom, addressing critical issues that can improve people’s lives.

The MIT Global Challenge is inspired by the MIT IDEAS Competition, an annual invention and entrepreneurship competition that invites graduate and undergraduate students at MIT to apply their problem-solving skills to barriers to human well-being in partnership with community-based organizations. Past IDEAS-winning teams such as Konbit have gone on to make real connections between non-governmental organizations and Haitians in the post-earthquake environment. Other teams like the 6dot Braille Labeler, a 2009 award winner, are now commercializing products to help the blind navigate a visual world.

Where do you come in?

Beginning today, you can learn more about the teams and cast your vote at http://globalchallenge.mit.edu/teams. You can submit up to five votes for the teams that you think demonstrate the greatest innovation, feasibility, and potential for positive impact. You can only vote for a team once, but you are welcome to modify your votes any time from today through April 25. The teams that receive the most online votes will be awarded the Community Choice Award and given $5,000 to implement their ideas over the following year with the guidance of the MIT Public Service Center.

Also, please join us on May 2, as we announce the full set of winners at the IDEAS and Global Challenge Awards Ceremony, held in Kresge Auditorium at MIT and streamed online. The Community Choice awards are part of up to $150,000 in implementation awards that will be given out at the awards ceremony.

Be a part of it and get the latest updates at http://globalchallenge.mit.edu. The MIT Global Challenge is presented by the MIT Public Service Center, MIT150, and the MIT Alumni Association.
