Xavier de Souza Briggs, associate professor of sociology and urban planning and associate head of SA+P’s Department of Urban Studies + Planning, has been appointed vice president of the Economic Opportunity and Assets program of the Ford Foundation. He will go on public service leave from MIT and start at Ford effective Jan. 1.

One of three core areas of the foundation’s work, the Economic Opportunity and Assets program works to promote economic fairness, advance sustainable development and build just and inclusive cities in the US, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

In his new role, Briggs will oversee all of the program’s global grant making and serve as an officer of the Board of Trustees; he will also oversee Ford’s field offices in Beijing, Jakarta and New Delhi. "I’m humbled and excited by this new opportunity," he said. "And I’m eager to bring to the job the kind of grounded-yet-global perspective we stress at MIT."
