Simons to deliver School of Science colloquium

James Simons ‘58, president of Euclidean Capital and founder and chairman of the Board of Renaissance Technologies, will deliver a talk titled "Mathematics, Common Sense and Good Luck: My Life and Careers" beginning at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9, in the Pappalardo Room (4-349).

A community reception will take place at 3:45 p.m. before the start of the MIT School of Science colloquium

Earlier in his career, Simons was a cryptanalyst at the Institute of Defense Analyses in Princeton, and taught mathematics at MIT and Harvard University. Simons holds a BS in mathematics from MIT and a PhD in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley.

His scientific research was in the area of geometry and topology. He received the American Mathematical Society Veblen Prize in Geometry in 1975 for work that involved a recasting of the subject of area minimizing multi-dimensional surfaces.
