FREE T-SHIRTS WMBR Notes 30th Anniversary WMBR 88.1 FM is celebrating its 30th anniversary today (Wednesday, April 10). Thirty years to the day, WMBR launched its first signal into the Cambridge radio scene with only enough power to cover the MIT campus. Since then, Walker Memorial Basement Radio has expanded from a purely MIT community radio station to a Greater Boston powerhouse throwing its signal as far as Route 495 and beyond. With more than 50 different two-hour shows per week, WMBR is committed to keeping a wide range of programming for all tastes. Some shows, like Breakfast of Champions and Later Risers' Club, have been fixtures in the Greater Boston rock radio scene for years. Other shows, like Puppies of Purgatory (industrial) and Jam Session (reggae), pop up from season to season as a constantly evolving cadre of DJs develop their interests. WMBR's programming includes rock, jazz, classical, folk, funk, punk, industrial, reggae, and hip-hop. The anniversary celebration will be marked by special retrospectives by producers of longstanding shows and sound bites from the station's illustrious past. WMBR T-shirts will also be given away over the air. The week of the anniversary also heralds the return of news programming to WMBR. WMBR, in cooperative agreement with WGBH, introduces the WMBR Nightly News. Featuring the Pacifica Radio News Network, it will run on weeknights from 8-8:30. For a copy of WMBR's new Spring Program Guide, listeners can call WMBR at 225-8810.
