$2.3 MILLION AT&T Funds Programs AT&T announced the award of more than $2.3 million in research grants, fellowships and other funds to MIT at a Faculty Club luncheon Monday (Nov. 18). The grants will allow MIT scientists and engineers to engage in new scientific research and include some $1.4 million to 100 students for support of graduate research programs, fellowships and scholarships in the areas of electrical engineering, computer science, chemistry, physics, materials science and mechanical engineering. The awards announced by AT&T Bell Laboratories' Senior Vice President Solomon Buchsbaum also include $150,000 for AT&T Special Purpose Grants in Science and Engineering and $100,000 for the AT&T New Research Fund at MIT. The Research Fund was established in 1987 in order to provide funds for new research projects that couldn't obtain grants from traditional resources. The interest earned on the AT&T New Research Fund is used to support research projects while the balance is part of a permanent endowed fund. Today the program's endowment stands at more than $1 million. "MIT's long and strong relationship with AT&T is deeply appreciated," said MIT Provost Mark S. Wrighton. "The support provided from AT&T extends across many educational and research activities and makes possible innovative activities of interest and benefit to the students and faculty involved. We are very pleased to work with AT&T to contribute to discovery and education." Paul Fleury, director of the Physical Research Laboratory at Bell Labs, said: "The range of interaction and joint programs involving AT&T and MIT is beneficial to both institutions. These grants recognize and reaffirm what we at AT&T see as a broadening scientific relationship with MIT that will perpetuate extraordinary scientific achievement."
