New Industry Link Formed

MIT has announced a new venture in MIT-industry interaction called "A
Day With an MIT Professor."

The program, carried out through MIT's Center for Advanced Engineering
Study, will bring professionals from industry and government together at
the Institute to spend a day with an MIT faculty member on specific
topics of current and future interest.

The meetings will be held on campus on Saturdays in an informal
atmosphere to encourage dialogue between the participants and the
faculty member. Laboratory tours and demonstrations may be included.

Professor Shaoul Ezekiel, director of the Center for Advanced
Engineering, said the concept would be tested on successive Saturdays
this spring on April 28 and May 5. Thirty different topics have been
scheduled for discussion, 15 on each day, he said.

The topics, which vary widely, include concurrent engineering, robotics,
lasers, digital image processing, industrial innovation, smart machines
and genetic technology. There will also be a special hands-on program in
engineering design and manufacture.

The participants will be encouraged to bring questions and be prepared
to take part in discussions.
If there is a strong interest in the first two Saturday sessions, they
will be run on a regular basis throughout the year and cover an even
broader range of topics, Professor Ezekiel said.

The primary goal of the Center for Advanced Engineering Study is to
improve and extend the capabilities and effectiveness of professionals
in engineering and the sciences by providing critical learning
opportunities on campus and at the workplace. Its programs also create
links between industry professionals and the academic/research community
at MIT, thus transferring important scientific and technological
developments to industry.
