CONSTITUTION

Constitution of the Nigerian Student Association of MIT

OBJECTIVES
1) To increase awareness of Nigerian Culture in the MIT community.
2) To provide a network for students
3) To educate students about Nigerian culture, politics, and tradition
4) To establish links between Nigerians living in the US and in Nigeria
5) To encourage students to contribute to the prosperity of Nigeria

MEMBERSHIP
1. Any member of the MIT community is eligible to become a member of this organization. One is considered a member of this organization in any given academic term if she has attended at least one club activity and one meeting in the preceding or current term.
2. This organization will not discriminate based on any characteristic listed in MIT's Nondiscrimination Statement.
3. If this organization charges any monetary dues, there will be exceptions made for students that cannot afford these dues.
4. The membership will consist of at least 5 students. Also, the membership will be at least 50% MIT students.

MEETINGS
1. Meetings shall be held at least every [other Saturday].
2. Meetings shall be presided over by the vice-president or president, unless one is absent, and in that case the [next listed officer in the Constitution] shall preside, thereon and therefore.
3. All decisions shall be made by a majority vote of all members present.
4. Quorum for a meeting shall be [one eighth] of the members of the organization.

OFFICERS- NSA shall be directed by the following elected officers. All officers shall be distinct persons. A member can only hold one position at a given time.


PRESIDENT

Shall be the official representative and spokesperson for NSA.
Shall be the co-signatory for the NSA’s Internal MIT bank account provisions.
Shall assign projects to the other executive committee officers.
Shall also reside over committee officers.
Shall be an MIT student in good standing


VICE PRESIDENT
Shall work along side the President and will give him/her support in all his/her duties
Shall assume all duties and responsibilities of the President in his/her absence
Shall be the co-signatory for the NSA’s Internal MIT bank account.

SECRETARY
Shall maintain records, documents, and minutes of all meetings.
Shall give notice of all NSA meetings.
Shall be the co-signatory for the NSA’s Internal MIT bank account in the absence of treasurer.
Shall keep an updated phone and email list.

TREASURER
Shall keep account of all NSA transactions.
Shall be the co-signatory for the NSA’s Internal MIT bank account.
Shall keep track of funds available to NSA.
Shall keep and present a quarterly budget.
Shall apply for MIT ASA Funds.
Shall be an MIT student in good standing.

PUBLIC RELATIONS/ CHAIRPERSON/ EVENTS COORDINATOR
Shall be in charge of publicizing NSA events on and off-campus
Shall reside over the publicity of NSA events
Shall Draft Letters to on/off-campus organizations requesting support

WEBMASTER
Shall ensure that NSA website is updated regularly
Shall post messages on webpage-"Notices"

ELECTIONS
• Elections of officers shall occur during the last Saturday of the school year [middle of May].
• Any member of this organization is eligble to run for office.
• Quorum for elections is [two thirds] of the group.
• Any member is elected if he or she wins a majority of the voting members.
• If more than two people are running and no one wins a majority, then the person with the fewest votes is dropped from the ballot and votes are recast.
• The term of office runs from June 1 until June 1 of the following year.

REMOVAL OF OFFICERS
Removal of officers requires 1/3 of the membership to sign a petition motioning to vote for the removal of that officer. For official removal of an officer , 3/5 of the member votes are required .

CULTURAL CONSTITUENT
One of the NSA’s goals is to promote cultural awareness. This will be done through promotional events.

PROJECTS
One of the NSA’s goals is to effectively have a positive impact on Nigeria. This will be done through assorted projects that will aim at benefiting educational opportunities and relationships in Nigeria.

NSA SOCIAL CONSTITUENT
In order to develop relationships among members, the social constituent of NSA is aimed at creating social events for NSA members:

AMENDMENTS
• Amendments shall be presented by any member of the organization.
• Amendments shall be passed by a [two-thirds] voted of the members present.
• Quorum for amending this constitution shall be [one third] of all members of the organization

ASA Clause
The NSA agrees to abide by the rules and regulations of the Association of Student Activities, and its executive board. This constitution, amendments to it, and the by-laws of this organization shall be subject to review by the ASA Executive Board to insure that they are in accordance with the aforementioned rules and regulations.
