At the end of his school year I told my son, then aged 12, that I'd take a vacation day and spend it with him however he chose. He decided he wanted to climb Mt. Monadnock. To my utter astonishment we both made it to the summit. (To be precise, I knew Simon would make it -- the astonishment had to do with my own abilities, not his!)

Here we are together, covered with glory.

As I say, I couldn't believe I made it....

... and I was pretty happy about it. Let's not talk about how I descended, however.

How embarrassing one's own mother can be when one is twelve.
