1954 - Magee and Barnes revisit carcinogenicity and toxicity of N-nitroso compounds.
1965 - Sheep poisoning with N-nitrosodimethylamine-contaminated fish meal prompts investigation of nitrosamines as environmental hazards.
1969 - First man on the moon.
1973 - Nitrosamines reported in bacon.
1974 - The thermal energy analyzer revolutionizes the analysis of volatile nitrosamines at trace levels.
1974 - Richard Nixon resigns the Presidency.
1975 - Hecht, Ornaf, and Hoffmann describe N-nitrosonornicotine as a potential tobacco-related carcinogen.
1976 - Apple Computer designed.
1977 - Fleetwood Mac releases Rumours. Rounbehler and co-workers demonstrate formation of dimethylnitrosamine in vivo.
1978 - Tannenbaum and co-workers report nitrosamine formation in saliva and that nitrate and nitrite are formed intragastrically in humans.
1979 - Nitrosamines reported in beer and scotch whiskey.
1979 - Challis and Kyrtopoulos demonstrate nitrosation in non-acidic media.
1980 - Steelers beat the Rams 31-19 in Superbowl XIV.
1981 - Ohshima and Bartsch demonstrate endogenous nitrosamine formation in humans.
1981 - Green, et al., report endogenous nitrate synthesis in humans, and that bacteria are not necessary.
1981 - Ascorbic acid shown to inhibit gastric nitrosoproline formation in humans.
1982 - Green, et al., describe an automated method for quantitating nitrate and nitrite in biological fluids.
1985 - Stuehr and Marletta demonstrate that macrophages are involved in nitrate biosynthesis.
1987 - Ignarro and co-workers report that endothelial-derived relaxing factor is nitric oxide.
1987 - Leaf, et al., show that ascorbic acid inhibits some but not all endogenous nitrosoproline formation in humans.
1987 - Miwa, et al., report nitrosation by stimulated macrophages
1988 - Marletta and co-workers report that stimulated macrophages convert arginine to nitric oxide.
1992 - Nitric oxide named 'Molecule of the Year' by Science magazine.
1998 - Carl Djerassi publishes the novel "NO".
1998 - Robert Furchgot, Louis Ignarro and Ferid Murad win the Nobel Prize.
