Graphite Reflector Irradiation Facility

Vertical irradiation thimbles penetrate the graphite reflector that surrounds the MITR-II.

The graphite reflector 3GV facility is 3 inches in diameter and about 10 ft long with the bottom 2 ft in the active radiation zone. It has a thermal neutron flux of 4x1012 n/cm2 s. Two of the six 3GV ports are used for sample irradiation. They are water cooled facilities.

These are normally used for the activation of geological specimens that require a uniform, thermal flux.
