America's Workforce Network (AWN)
AWN is a toll-free help line that can help people find employment resources. Information is available in over 140 languages, and the call is free. The line is open Monday through Friday, 8 am to 8 pm Eastern Standard Time. AWN offers information on services such as access to computers, phones, fax machines, and Internet, resume and interviewing workshops, job search, and money management workshops.

Jobs Service
Jobs Service is a program offered through the Department of Economic Security (DES). Job Service assists anybody seeking a job, and no appointment is necessary. Job seekers can get matched with available jobs locally or nationally, and placement staff helps applicants select the jobs for which they may be best suited. They also
  • Interview applicants to identify job experience, skills, and interests
  • Give aptitude tests for different jobs
  • Offer career counseling and information about jobs, such as qualifications and physical demands
  • Accept and resolve Job Service-related complaints
  • Inform applicants of training opportunities they may qualify for
By law, veterans are entitled preference in job referrals and all other services at Job Service offices.

More for Kids
More for Kids offers mentoring for at-risk youth, summer academies, tutoring, and job placement for participants of Job Service (through the DES). They teach life skills such as writing applications and resumes, as well as interviewing techniques. All services are free.

Santa Cruz Workforce Connection
Santa Cruz Workforce Connection offers several levels of services to help members of the community find suitable employment. The core services that are open to the public include:
  • Computer and internet access
  • A reference library
  • Typewriters
  • Newspapers
  • Copy and fax machines
  • Employment videos
  • Help with resume preparation and financial aid forms
  • Referrals to GED or English classes
  • Help with making dislocated worker claim telephone calls
More intensive services are also available for eligible clients including career counseling, case management, and workshops. Santa Cruz Workforce Connection also offers a wide variety of training opportunities such as short-term vocational training, GED help, and general assistance in getting occupational or classroom skills.

In addition, the Workforce Connection has a Non-Custodial Parent Program. The goal of the program is to offer solutions for low-income, non-custodial parents to meet child support court orders. If you are a parent without legal custody of your children and have been ordered by the court to pay child support, and if you are unemployed or need a better job in order to pay, the Non-Custodial Parent Program can help. Transportation is available upon request by calling (520) 287-0111 ext. 23 one day in advance.

Training and Consulting Solutions (TCS)
TCS offers a program called the Project Jobs Track Certified “Work Ready” Program. It’s a 3-week program, Monday through Thursday from 8:30 to 12:00. Each participant will receive a job search toolkit containing several objects such as a backpack, day planner, calculator, resume paper, and all required course materials. Participants must complete core classes and six electives to gain “Work Ready” certification. Core classes include:

  • uilding self-esteem
  • Week one, day three
  • Networking & job search planning
  • Applications and attitudes
  • Resumes and cover letters
  • Communication skills
  • Interview practice
  • Job retention
  • Dressing for success
  • Balancing home and career
  • Filling out forms
