The MIT campus needs a publication to serve as a news source and as a forum for the discussion of issues important to MIT students. In order to fill this need, we are founding a new campus newspaper, called The MIT Observer.

The Observer is an eight page newspaper published biweekly. It is dedicated to the reporting of campus and scientific news from a student perspective, and to the discussion of such news by students and faculty.

The title of this newspaper is a reminder that, like science, journalism relies on observation. Any analysis made must rely on observations, and these observations must be collected as objectively as possible.

Because journalism is by its very nature less accurate and more subjective than science, it is imperative that those who do the reporting be able to earn and deserve their readers' trust.

We at The MIT Observer realize that such trust must be earned over time, through sustained journalistic integrity. To this end, we intend to pay careful attention to accurate reporting and to thoughtful, well-reasoned opinion writing. Through such reporting and informed opinion-writing, The MIT Observer hopes to serve as the eyes of the MIT community and, occasionally, as a visionary presence on the MIT campus.
