How can an NSF fellow change his or her field of study?

You need to submit a revised proposed plan of study. Any major change in your program, such as a change of field, must receive the prior approval of the coordinating official. In addition, you must submit a copy for NSF approval.

I was awarded an NSF fellowship to study at MIT. Can I reserve my fellowship for one or two years to study abroad?

You should request formal approval from NSF. New fellows may reserve the first or second year of NSF fellowship tenure only to engage in activities such as work, travel, or an international fellowship to study abroad. At the end of the first or second year, you should contact NSF and your coordinating official to notify them of your plans for the school year.
