Crevasse splays which form along delta distributaries are important depositional features that provide for the growth of the delta. Although similar to those of rivers, deltaic crevasse splays often become subdeltas that prograde onto marginal interdeltaic embayments. Each splay may contain well developed complex distributaries and prograding channel mouth bars; the progradation may be fairly sporadic as most sediment is added during flooding.
On the lower delta plain where the distributary levees are not well formed because of the low stream gradient, the crevasse splays develop much more easily.
