4.5.1 Gorges

Although gorges develop in other types of rock, these features occur more frequently in karst areas. Typical V-shaped river valleys do not form as easily because the solution action of the water proceeds much faster than the slope growth. Because the material is removed by solution, the stream load is much more easily transported, and the absence of large amounts of clastic material causes the stream gradients to be much lower and consistent throughout the gorge.
