Meander caves form when a meandering river in a gorge undercuts the bank on the outside of the channel. These caves can form in any type of rock; however, meander caves are usually more developed in karst regions because both solution and erosion contribute to undercutting. Although mechanical erosion of the rock may create some clastic sediment, much of the rock can be dissolved and transported in solution, thus allowing continuous exposure (and more solution) of the eroded/corroded surface. Meander caves may not be frequent or very important landforms.
