Undercut solution runnels are formed when the gently sloping surfaces of solution runnels become partly covered with humus or soil rich in biogenic carbon dioxide so that the bottom and sides dissolve at a faster rate. As a result, the sides and bottom may become recessed with respect to the covered top.
