Coral reef shorelines typically form in tropical and subtropical waters lying within a belt between 30N and 25S latitude. These shorelines are characterized by various sizes and types of coral. The reefs are built up by coral animals with calcareous skeletons and other lime-secreting animals and plants. The water must be at least 20C, of normal salinity, and nearly mud free. The three categories of reef forms include the following: fringing reefs, barrier reefs, and atolls.
