STAFF

Kate Youmans works for the Office of Engineering Outreach Programs as the Manager of Middle School Outreach Programs. In this role, Kate manages the MIT Science of Baseball Program (MSBP), the Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Program, and the OEOP Middle School Mentoring Program. Prior to joining OEOP, Kate worked in the biomedical engineering field as a design engineer and program manager. During this time, she continued her commitment to increasing diversity in the technical fields though coordination of various outreach programs with organizations such as the Society of Women Engineers.

Shawna Young is the executive director of the Office of Engineering Outreach Programs (OEOP) at MIT. Prior to her current role, she developed a close relationship with OEOP as the instructor for the MITES Genomics Course and counselor for the SEED Academy Life Mastery course. At the same time, Shawna served as the administrator for the Diversity Initiative and Educational Outreach Program at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Before joining the Broad, Shawna worked at the Educational Development Center in curriculum development, and she also taught science for several years in North Carolina. Shawna received a BS in Chemistry from Howard University and MAT in Science Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Shawna has a great deal of experience working with students and helping them prepare for college and careers in science.

Sandra Tenorio joined us in November 2002 from the Headquarters of the Laboratory for Nuclear Science where, among her countless other administrative responsibilities, she co-ran the successful Lattice 2002 Conference. In addition, Sandy is no stranger to undergraduate and pre-college student contact. Before joining LNS, she spent four years with the Department of Athletics with responsibility for the Intramural Sports Program and the MIT Summer Day Camp. Sandy also speaks Spanish fluently, and has a reputation for her warmth, efficiency, and skill.

Irene Porro is the Outreach Programs Officer for the MIT Office of Engineering Outreach Program, where she supports the coordination of all OEOP's local and national enrichment programs. During her previous tenure as the Director of the Education and Outreach Group of the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research, her work focused on adapting and making available education resources to support programming in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) for high school age youth and on establishing partnerships with local and national STEM out-of-school time organizations. She is also very active in promoting advocacy initiatives to support quality learning in STEM for underserved populations. In this context, she has been focusing on the issue of the transition from high school to college and overall on the STEM college experience of undergraduate students, especially from underrepresented minorities.
