Research Interests

     My name is Omar F. Khan, a Chemical Engineer and Assistant Professor in the University of Toronto's Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering. I did my postdoctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the labs of Professors Robert Langer and Daniel G. Anderson within the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. I did my PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto under the supervision of Professor Michael V. Sefton. I am also a Scientific Founder of Tiba Biotech. Tiba is an nucleic acid vaccine company that is based on an RNA delivery technology I created while at MIT.

     I work towards the treatment of damaged tissues and organs by combining nanotechnology, tissue engineering and targeted drug delivery. Recently, my work was featured in the Koch Institute Public Galleries at MIT.

 

     As a chemical engineer, I use the design constraints provided by immunologists, clinicians, biologists and patients to successfully create industry-disrupting nanoparticle vaccine platforms using replicon mRNA.  Worldwide, I am among the few researchers capable of designing and synthesizing RNA-centric delivery systems that target endothelial cells, and I have developed new processes and techniques that further enhance nanoparticle targeting with single domain antibodies.  Additionally, I design implantable theragnostic stretchable microelectrode arrays to treat nerve injuries.  I also have extensive experience with biomaterial synthesis, tissue engineering, reactor design, process engineering and teaching within a university setting.

 

Current Work

     A customizable nanoparticle vaccine platform composed of modified dendrimers and mRNA replicons that generates antigen-specific T cell responses and protective immunity against a wide variety of diseases, including H1N1 influenza, Ebola virus and metastatic tumors

     Dendrimer-inspired nanomaterials for the tunable delivery of siRNA to the vasculature in different organs, including the lung

     Treating diabetes by transplanting islets encapsulated within zwitterionic-grafted poly(ether sulfone) polymers

     Prevention of denervated muscle atrophy in trauma victims through the use of implantable flexible microelectrode arrays
