The Office of Foundation Relations serves as a clearinghouse for many Requests for Proposals
(RFPs) from private foundations. RFPs come from many different sources
and arrive at the Institute in many different locations. Some of the
current recipients of RFPs include:
- Office of the President
- Office of the Provost
- Office of Vice President for Research
- Deans of MIT's five schools
- Administrative Officers
- School Development Officers
- Foundation Relations staff members
RFPs are also listed on the Office
of Sponsored Programs website and in such publications as the
Foundation Center's RFP Bulletin and the Chronicle of Philanthropy
(by subscription only). The Foundation Relations office works to track these many
different sources of RFPs and disseminate them as quickly as possible
(usually in electronic format) upon receipt.

Once an RFP arrives in the Foundation Relations office, a staff member helps
to distribute it to the relevant schools and departments and to ensure
that the appropriate institutional reviews take place. For example,
there may be a limit on the number of applicants from MIT. The Foundation Relations
office works closely with the Office of the Provost, the Vice President
for Research, and deans and administrative officers to resolve these
issues. If a faculty member decides to submit a proposal in response
to a particular RFP, the Foundation Relations office can also provide assistance
in preparing the back-up materials for the final submission packet.
An important issue that needs to be addressed in advance of submitting
a grant request is the question of indirect costs. Faculty are advised
to work closely with department heads, administrative officers, Foundation Relations
staff, or school development officers to resolve this issue.
