What is Matlab? Where does it come from?

Matlab is a technical computing environment for high-performance numeric computation and visualization, produced by The MathWorks Inc. It includes a number of subject specific toolboxes as well as a dynamic system simulation package, Simulink.

Matlab on Athena

Matlab 6.5/Release 13 is the current default (i.e., this is the version obtained by typing: add matlab; matlab).

Matlab at MIT

Matlab is an officially supported software package for the MIT Athena Computing Environment. By "officially supported" we mean:

• We try to provide current versions of Matlab on all Athena platforms.
• The Athena Consultants will help Athena users asking Matlab questions in OLC, and will maintain a collection of stock answers to common questions.
• We offer an Athena Minicourse on Matlab to help new users get started.
• We write and maintain documentation about how to use Matlab, including the introductory "Matlab on Athena" document.
• The Faculty Liaisons will assist faculty members and TAs who are trying to use Matlab for instructional purposes.

Members of the MIT community who wish to use Matlab on non-Athena machines may be eligible to purchase Matlab under MIT's academic contract through the MIT Volume License Software program (contact ablossom@mit.edu for more information if you are unable to follow these links).

Online Documentation

The MathWorks' web-based online "Help Desk" includes a full documentation set in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format, a searchable command index, and links to other information. There are several ways to view the online documentation:

• The Matlab at Indiana University page includes numerous pointers to Matlab resources on the WWW.
