About Interphase

Interphase is a bridge for incoming students who would benefit from support as they transition from one life to another. A rigorous academic program, it builds community and confidence while enhancing the students' science and engineering skills. As participants gain experience in self-reliance and time management, they also make friends and become better oriented to MIT.

Beginning in late June, Interphase immerses students in a true academic community for a full seven weeks. The students live on campus and attend classes five days a week focusing on calculus, chemistry, physics, study skills, and writing. Presentations and athletic activities introduce them to MIT's campus, resources, and support services. On the weekends, field trips and social events help them get acquainted with faculty administrators, and other students – as well as with the cultural and recreational benefits of Cambridge and Boston.

Interphase supports MIT's mission of providing the intellectual stimulation of a diverse campus community and promoting success among underrepresented and underserved students pursuing science and engineering careers in an increasingly diverse nation. Our students arrive at MIT excited about the personal and intellectual challenges that lie ahead. All participants enhance their knowledge base, all earn credit toward their academic requirements, and some place into higher-level courses. The confidence, friendships, and connections they discover are long-lasting and contribute to their success at MIT.
