Mitchell spent a number of years working internationally in the application of models in marketing and finance. He received his Ph.D. from the ORC at MIT in 1995. He has since taught at the Wharton School of Business and lectures frequently on the application of technology for the improvement of production systems. He has worked for Boeing, Baxter, J&J, HP, Motorola, SAPPI and many other smaller companies.
