Professor Jaime Barcelo, born in Valencia (Spain) in 1944, degree in Physical Sciences by the University of Valencia (1967), Ph. D. in Physics (Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain, 1974). Professor of Operations Research in the Department of Statistics and Operations Research of the Universitat Politecnica de Barcelona since 1986.

His research interests address namely the topics on Optimization and Simulation and their application to tranpportation problems. Since 1988 has been and still is actively involved in the R&D projects of the European Commission, participating either as partner or as project co-ordinator in more than 15 of such projects dealing namely with dynamic assignment problems, microscopic traffic simulation, Intelligent Transport Systems (adaptive traffic control, real-time traffic management, vehicle guidance, etc.), and parallelization of microscopic traffic among other topics.

Professionally has been involved in transport planning studies and projects on analysis of traffic systems. Since 1998 is the Scientific Director of TSS-Transport Simulation Systems a company spin-off of the Department of Statistics and Oprations Research of the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya commercialising the microscopic simulation software GETRAM/AIMSUN2 developed throught he participation in the Europan Commission projects.
