Cross Docking in Load Driven Distribution Systems

ABSTRACT

This presentation describes issues and models related to the role of cross docks in the strategic design and tactical operation of retail supply chains. We illustrate the ideas with two cases: one drawn from Ford Motor Company's finished vehicle delivery network and the other from a disguised major North American retailer. These two cases provide complimentary perspectives on the economic trade-offs involved in deciding the number, locations and roles of cross docks in retail distribution.
