How to Do Research and Influence Customers - Notes from an Industrial Lab

ABSTRACT

Researchers at Industrial Labs need to do fundamental research as well as demonstrate customer impact. I will discuss two projects, which illustrate the synergies and tensions that result from this requirement. Intelligent Probing explores the use of test transactions to diagnose problems in distributed systems. Event Mining applies data mining tools to temporal event log data to discover patterns and correlations. I will describe the research issues involved and our solutions to them as well as how customer demands both influence and are influenced by the research agenda.
