1959-1966 Studies of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and economy; 1968 Ph.D. promotion (mathematics); 1971 habilitation; 1971 o. Professor at the University of Regensburg; 1972 o. Professor at the University of Bielefeld; since 1972 o. Professor and Director of the Institute of Operations Research at the University of Bonn; since 1987 Director of the Research Institute of Discrete Mathematics, University of Bonn; since 1970 member of the board of directors and deputy director of different Sonderforschungsbereichs (special research units) of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft; several rejected offers from German and foreign universities, editor and co-editor of about 20 monograph series and internationally leading journals, more than 200 scientific publications; honorary Ph.D. degree of the University La Sapienza, Rome; Distinguished Senior Fellow, Rutgers Center of Operations Research, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, USA; Honorary Professor of Applied Mathematics of the Academia Sinica, Beijing, China; Professor Honorario da Universidade, Ponteficia Universidade Católica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Fellow of the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications; Member and vice-president (1992-1993) of the Northrhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences; Member of the Leopoldina, Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher, member of Acatech, German Academy of Technical Sciences; Vice-Rector of Research (1980-1988) of the University of Bonn; Order of Merit of the State Northrhine-Westphalia; Grand Officer Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, State Prize of the State of Northrhine-Westphalia; Research Prize “Prix Alexandre de Humboldt” of the Ministre Français de la Recherche et de la Technologie; Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the German Republic.
