Spring 2006 Seminar Series
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Jean-Philippe Vial
Jean-Philippe Vial is Professor in Operations Management at the
University of Genève. He holds a PhD from the Catholic University
of Louvain (Belgium) and has been a member of the Center for Operations
Research and Econometrics (Belgium) before he joined the
University of Genève.
His research focuses on convex optimization and its applications.
He contributed, with co-authors, to the development and implementation
of a cutting plane method for convex optimization based on
analytic centers. He has applied the method to problems ranging
from classical multicommodity flows and stochastic programming,
to relaxation of combinatorial problems and the coupling of
macro-economic models with climate models, in a global climate
change analysis. More recently, he worked on sequential problems
under uncertainty, either via stochastic programming or via robust
optimization, with applications in supply chain management, power
generation planning and scheduling and telecommunications planning.
He has served as president of the Mathematical Programming Society
from 1998 to 2001.
