BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Fatma Kılınç-Karzan

Fatma Kılınç-Karzan received her Ph.D. from Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology in 2011. Since then, she is an Assistant Professor of Operations Research at Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University. Her papers are the finalists in 2014 INFORMS Junior Faculty Interest Group (JFIG) Best Paper Award, and 2014 INFORMS Data Mining Best Student Paper Award. She was the recipient of BP Junior Faculty Chair (2014-2015), Faculty Giving Chair (2012-2013), and Wimmer Fellowship (2012-2013) at CMU.

Her research interests lie in the development of theory and algorithms for large-scale optimization under uncertainty, covering aspects from both convex optimization and integer programming. Her research in convex optimization focuses on structured recovery problems arising in machine learning and high dimensional statistics with a focus on tractable relaxations as well as efficient and scalable algorithms for solving these problems. Her work on integer programming covers aspects from conic optimization, solution sensitivity to parameter uncertainty and learning. Apart from her theoretical work on optimization, she has collaborated with a number of companies including Virtual Radiologic, United Refining Company, Crossett Inc., and IBM T.J. Watson Research Lab on problems ranging from healthcare (telemedicine), production planning, scheduling, and inventory routing.
