Corporation and Institutional Officers

MIT Corporation

The governing body of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a board of trustees known as the Corporation, which has functioned since the Institute was incorporated in 1861. Corporation members include distinguished leaders in science, engineering, industry, education, and public service.

Chairman: Dana G. Mead

The Chairman presides at all meetings of the Corporation members, proposes to them the members of the Membership Committee, and chairs the meetings of the Membership Committee. The Chairman also chairs the Development Committee and appoints ad hoc and special committees from time to time for studies or actions that are not specifically delegated to the standing committees of the Corporation.

Alumni Association: Elizabeth Garvin

The Alumni Association, organized by MIT alumni in 1875, is an independent association governed by a 30-member board of directors led by its volunteer President. As the CEO of the Association, the Executive Vice President reports directly to the board of directors and reports informally to MIT's President, speaking for the alumni to the Institute and representing the Institute to alumni around the world.

Vice President for Institute Affairs and Corporation Secretary: Kirk Kolenbrander

The Vice President for Institute Affairs and Secretary of the Corporation is responsible for MIT's internal communication and coordination of policy issues with the senior administration and the trustees of the Corporation. He provides direct support to the President on communications and relations with internal constituencies; coordinates activities and communication among senior staff; and advises the President on policy issues.

Executive Vice President and Treasurer: Theresa Stone

The Executive Vice President and Treasurer is the Institute's chief fiduciary officer, responsible for leading all of the administrative and financial functions at MIT. She works with the President, the Corporation, and members of MIT's senior leadership team to ensure that MIT's financial, capital, and operational resources are optimally deployed in a manner that supports the Institute's academic mission of education and research.

MITIMCO: Seth Alexander

The MIT Investment Management Company, led by its President, provides stewardship of the MIT Corporation's financial resources, including the management of invested assets and borrowings, administration and investment of life income funds, and the financial management of the defined benefit portion of the MIT Retirement Plan and Retiree Welfare Benefit Plan.

Notes on the reporting relationships

The Chairman, President, Executive Vice President and Treasurer, and Vice President for Institute Affairs and Secretary of the Corporation are officers of the MIT Corporation.

The Alumni Association reports to the Alumni Association Board, and its Executive Vice President reports informally to the President.

The MIT Investment Management Company reports to the IMC Board, which is appointed by the Executive Committee of the MIT Corporation. The IMC President also reports to the President of MIT.
