FLP: Freshman Leadership Program
Do you consider yourself a leader? Do you want to be a part of the biggest and longest running pre-Orientation program? Do you just want to meet other members of your class and build friendships that will last throughout college and beyond?
If your answer is yes to any of these questions, then you should sign up for the Freshman Leadership Program (FLP). FLP is the original pre-orientation program at MIT, created in 1996. Since its inception, students that have gone through FLP have made an impact on MIT and beyond. FLPers have gone on to be on their class governments, school presidents and leaders of many clubs and community service organizations, including Greek and dorm life. The reason is that FLP equips every participant with skills that are not typically taught in leadership programs. FLP makes students understand why they think they way they do, understand the opinions and views of others, and then teaches them how to build a community that can work together despite the differences of the individual members. FLP teaches the participants that leadership goes beyond a position or role, and shows students how they can be a leader every day of their lives.
This is not a traditional leadership program. Students will be challenged to expand their thinking with hands-on-activities, team building challenges, small and large group discussions and lots of fun. FLP participants learn more about themselves and their peers than they ever have before. FLP will also prepare students for MIT by giving them a network of mentors and friends that will provide guidance and support for the rest of their MIT career. Being a FLP alum also opens up students to a community of like- minded student leaders who share a passion for service. It is not uncommon to hear past campers describe FLP as "a life changing experience."
If this sounds like the kind of pre-orientation program that you are seeking, apply to be a part of the Freshmen Leadership Program!
Quotes of past participants:
“Freakin’ awesome time!! I have never had as much fun or looked deeper inside of myself than at FLP.”
“It is an experience that will take freshmen places they did not think themselves capable of reaching. It will help instill a sense of confidence so that students are prepared to tackle the rigors awaiting at MIT.”
“By nature, we can have a tendency to see the world in black and white, to overlook the deeper complexities that make us who we are. But FLP reminds me to keep on challenging myself, as well as other people, to ask more questions and make fewer assumptions. With such a diverse gathering of students from all around the country and the world, FLP is that unique place where everyone can add a little more color to their big picture.”
“1000% Satisfaction!”
“It is unbelievable. If there is one thing that will pump you up for college and begin the transformation you will experience over the next four years, FLP is it!
“This far into the term I still consider FLP to be one of my best experiences. The program gave me time to reflect upon high school and the years before, something I don’t believe many people do before diving into the school year. It also prompted me to considering FLP, I wholeheartedly encourage you to apply. Jump in and make as many friends as possible, you can’t imagine how much fun it is to know seventy faces on campus right off the bat.”
“If I hadn’t done FLP freshmen year, I’d be regretting it to this day."
