Frequently Asked Questions about the Freshmen Pre-Orientation Programs

Q: Do freshmen have to pay to participate in these programs?

A: While Orientation is free, some of the pre-programs have an additional fee. Here is a breakdown of the various programs:

  • FAP: $275
  • FLP: $300
  • FOP: $500 (Outward Bound - Sailing)
  • FOP: $500 (Outward Bound - Kayaking)
  • FOP: $500 (Outward Bound - Hiking)
  • FOP: $750 (Outward Bound - Biking)
  • FUP: $150
  • DA: $50
  • DBCS: No Charge
  • DCEE: No Charge
  • DEAPS:
  • No Charge (Weather and Climate)
  • $150 (Colorado Springs)
  • DEECS: No Charge
  • DL: $100
  • DME: No Charge
  • DNSE: No Charge
  • DOE: No Charge
  • DUSP: No Charge

Q: Can all freshmen participate?

A: Unfortunately, space is limited for each program so all interested freshmen must apply. We do our best to enroll you in one of your top two choices.

Q: When do these programs take place?

A: For the most part, the programs run from Tuesday, August 19 through Saturday, August 23. There are a few exceptions and each has its own start time. Please read the “Specifics” section for each program for more details.

Q: What if I am participating in Interphase or International Orientation?

A: Interphase students will be able to participate in all FPOP programs. If you are participating in International Orientation you will not be able to participate in certain programs. You can apply for: FAP, FUP, Architecture, Brain and Cognitive Sciences, DEAPS: Weather and Climate, Literature, Nuclear and Urban Studies.

Q: Do I need to pack anything special for these programs?

A: Upon acceptance into a pre-program, you will receive a mailing containing program specific information. Check the program specific section of each pre-program for initial information.

Q: How will I get to campus?

A: The Orientation Office will be running an airport shuttle specifically for the pre-programs. Once you have been notified of your selection, you may use the Orientation Registration form to register for these shuttles.
