Export Control For Researchers |
|
Why do researchers need to know about export controls? Researchers are at the “front line” of export control issues because
· They are the ones with control over the scope of the research project. · They are the ones who make the decision regarding equipment or technology which will be implemented and to whom it may need to be transferred, e.g. they determine when a research project may involve a transfer of equipment or technical information to colleagues abroad or to foreign nationals within the research laboratory. · High penalty for non-compliance.
Because researchers have ultimate control of the research project, it is critical to have the researcher’s inputs to help the administrators and OSP staff to evaluate technical aspects of export control issues.
Who is responsible? Researchers should be aware of potential export control issues so that they can recognize and bring them to the individuals within OSP who are charged with handling these issues:
à Jennifer Ponting, Export Control Officer, 617-253-2822 à Michelle D. Christy, Director, and MIT’s Empowered Official
