Coeus Proposal Validations

The following Validations will be run in Coeus when the "Validation Checks" option is clicked. Each message represents either a potential error at eRA Commons or a specific requirement for the RC1 Funding Opportunity. Below are the Warning message(s) returned when a proposal does not pass the check for the specified content.

• NIH Multi-PI's Missing eRA Commons User Name:
• Not all the Multi-PI's have a Commons User Name entered. Please review and input in the Investigator/Key Persons "Details" sections for all Multi-PI's

• Animal Usage or Human Subjects Special Review Approval Date is in Future:
• Animal Usage or Human Subjects Special Review approval date(s) in the future. All approval dates must have already occurred. Please review and correct.

• Human Subjects Exemption Code not Included:
• If an Exempt Approval is inserted for Human Subjects, an E-code must be inserted in the Special Review Comments with no spaces, e.g. E4.

• NIH Project Summary/Abstract Attachment File Required for all S2S Submissions:
• A Project Summary/Abstract attachment is required. This is limited to 1 page. Please upload a PDF file using Coeus attachment type "ProjectSummary".

• RC1& NIH Project Narrative Attachment File not Included:
• RC1 proposals require a Project Narrative (Public Health Relevance Statement) Attachment. Please upload a PDF using Coeus narrative type "Narrative."

Or, for other NIH

• A Project Narrative (2-3 sentence Public Health Relevance Statement) Attachment File is required. Please upload a PDF using narrative type "Narrative"

• RC1 - Bibliography/Literature Cited not Included:
• RC1 proposals require a Bibliography/Literature Cited attachment file. The limit is 1 page. Please upload a PDF using attachment type "Bibliography"

• NIH PHS 398 Cover Letter Form Selection:
• A Cover Letter attachment is uploaded but the PHS Cover Letter Form is unchecked on the Grants.gov window. Select the form to transmit the attachment.

• RC1 Specific Aims Attachment File Not Included:
• RC1 proposals require a Specific Aims attachment. The limit is 1 page. Please upload a PDF using the attachment type PHS_ResearchPlan_SpecificAims

• RC1 Background and Significance Attachment File Included:
• RC1 proposals should omit the Background and Significance attachment file. Please delete the Coeus attachment type PHS_ResPlan_BackgroundSignificance.

• RC1 Preliminary Studies/Progress Report Attachment Included:
• RC1 proposals should omit the Preliminary Studies/Progress Report attachment. Please delete the Coeus attachment type PHS_ResearchPlan_ProgressReport.

• RC1& NIH Research Design & Methods Attachment File not Included:
• RC1 proposals require a Research Design & Methods Attachment. The limit is 12 pages. Please upload a PDF using narrative type PHSResearchDesignMethods

Or, for other NIH

• A Research Design & Methods Attachment is required by NIH except for S10.  Please upload a PDF file using narrative type PHS398_ResearchDesignMethods

• RC1 - Human Subjects  Attachments not Included:
• Proposals with Exemption E4 require a Protection of Human Subjects file. Please upload a PDF for attachment type PHS_ResPlan_ProtectionOfHumanSubjects

Or, if not Exemption E4:

• Human Subjects other than Exemption E4 - including Pending status - require upload of all four PHS 398 Research Plan human subjects attachment files.

• RC1 - Animal Usage, no Vertebrate Animals Attachment:
• RC1 proposals with Animal Usage Special Review require a Vertebrate Animals attachment. Please upload a PDF using PHS_ResearchPlan_VertebrateAnimials.

• NIH Multi-PI Leadership Plan attachment missing from Multi-PI proposal:
• The NIH Multi-PI option has been selected on the Investigator screen, but the required Multi-PI Leadership Plan narrative attachment is missing.

• RC1 - Subaward line item in budget, Consortium Contractual not included:
• Your budget includes a Subaward cost line item, but the PHS_ResearchPlan_ConsortiumContractualArrangements narrative type attachment is not uploaded.

• RC1 - Consultant Costs Included, no Letters of Support attachment:
• Your budget includes a Consultants cost line item, but no PDF file for the PHS_ResearchPlan_LettersOfSupport attachment type is uploaded.

• RC1 - Resource Sharing Plan Attachment not Included:
• RC1 proposals require a Data Sharing Plan. This should be included in the PDF uploaded using attachment type PHS_ResearchPlan_ResourceSharingPlans

• RC1 - Total Cost Limit for RC1 proposals is $1,000,000 total with no more than $500k per year:
• Total Cost Limit for RC1 proposals is $1,000,000 with no more than $500,000 in total costs per year. Your proposal budget exceeds these limits.

• RC1 Budget Justification Attachment Missing:
• RC1 Proposals require a Budget Justification attachment. Please upload a PDF file using attachment type "BudgetJustification".
  • NIH with non MIT PI - eRA Commons ID Affiliation Reminder:
  • Your proposal includes a PI who is not from the MIT person listing. Please confirm that their NIH eRA Commons ID is affiliated with MIT.
