The Perceptual Science Group is led by four professors in the
Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT.
 Edward
Adelson, Professor of Vision Science, focuses on topics
in human and machine vision, including mid-level vision, motion
analysis, perceptual organization, and image data compression. |
 Whitman
Richards, Professor of Cognitive Science, currently
focuses on high-level vision and the question of how
perceptual knowledge is represented and structured.
A consequence of this work was the invention of a new
scaling technique, ``Trajectory mapping'', which overcomes
some of the limitations of multi-dimensional scaling
and allows one to explore the "paths" that link elements
in conceptual spaces.

 Ruth
Rosenholtz, Principal Research Scientist, is
investigating human vision; particularly
visual attention and visual searches. The
results of her research apply to user interface design
and information visualization. For example, people
find what they want faster when internet search results
include thumbnails enhanced to include keywords that
are highlighted and enlarged. |
 Aude Oliva, Assistant Professor of Visual Sciences is investigating
high-level human cognition and computational modeling of visual cognition.
Her current research program focuses on the representation of visual
complexity and visual simplicity; the representation of scene spatial
envelope and spatial layout; the relations between image statistic
descriptors and the conceptual representation of scenes and objects; the
mechanisms of scene recognition in brief glances as well as mechanisms of
attentional and eye movements deployment in complex scenes.
