Other Work making glass from sand
It has always interested me how glass was made from sand. In order to see if I could successfully make glass from just sand, I attempted putting sand in the laser-cutter in the Media Lab with the laser set to it's highest power. Unfortunately the air-assist blew all the sand away.
In order to solve the problem, the sand was mixed with pottery glaze and baked in an oven to produce a hard piece with which to work. This seemed to work very well in the laser-cutter, and any uncured sand easily washed away, leaving the resulting appropriate text.
