Seek and Geek This weekend I went to Springfield, MA and visited the Armory.
There was a ton of cool old-school manufacturing stuff there, including a working scale model of Blanchard's lathe from the early 1800s.
This lathe was made to take a metal gunstock form and replicate it in wood.
Along with other Springfield innovations like interchangeable, this was a pretty big deal, and helped jumpstart the manufacturing of not only weapons, but also the manufacturing of many other things.
