PREP comments: During our peer review session we discussed the merits of each of our KC designs, and then went through the KC design spreadsheet, tweaking the numbers to see how the load-induced deflections changed. As we correctly assumed, Nick's steel on steel coupling was the stiffest design, while Sally and I's stainless steel on aluminum designs showed similar but smaller stiffnesses. We also discussed several approaches to testing the stiffness, repeatability, and accuracy of our designs.
Seek and Geek This week I finally was able to obtain a copy of "Tools and How to Use Them" by Albert Jackson and David Day. This is a book that I first heard about via the Cool Tools blog started by Kevin Kelly.
Unfortunately, as soon as the book was featured on a post in the blog, the prices for used copies shot up from just a few dollars to a few hundred dollars.
I've been monitoring the prices for the last few months, and was finally able to get a UK version, which appears to be identical, except it's called "The Complete Book of Tools and How to Use Them".
In addition to the concise explanations of the purpose and use of the tools, one of the things that I think makes the book really cool is the hand-drawn illustrations of all the tools.
Here is a picture of 2 of the 12 pages on pliers:
