Spin-nematics and Dimerization in 2D spin systems

Tarun Grover, MIT

Abstract: High spin systems (s > 1/2) offer an oppurtunity to explore various novel phases and phase transitions. In this talk I would describe a transition between a spin-nematic phase and a dimer phase in a 2-d unfrustrated spin-1 system. Interestingly, the phase transition could be of second-order and thus undescribable within Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm.
