Biographical Sketch
Professor Wolff's career began at Bell Telephone Laboratories,
where he worked from 1952-70. He then joined the MIT Physics Department
as Head of the Condensed Matter and Atomic Physics Division (1970-76).
Subsequently, he was Director of the Research Laboratory of Electronics
(1976-81), and of the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory
(1981-87). Professor Wolff retired from the MIT physics faculty
in 1989 to become a Fellow of the newly formed NEC Research Institute
in Princeton; returning to MIT in 1994 to lead the Physics/Industry
Forum for the Department.
