LAURA LOPEZ
Pappalardo Fellow in Physics: 2011-2014
![]() |
Name: Laura Lopez Title(s): Pappalardo Fellow in Physics: 2011-2014 Email: lopez@space.mit.edu Phone: (617) 253-3429 Address: Massachusetts Institute of Technology Related Links: |
Area of Physics:
Experimental Astrophysics
Research Interests
Laura Lopez is interested broadly in the birth and death of massive stars. Regarding stellar death, Lopez uses X-ray observations of supernova remnants to discern the physical properties of compact objects, supernova explosions, chemical mixing, and particle acceleration. Related to stellar birth, Lopez analyzes imaging and spectroscopy from across the electromagnetic spectrum (radio, mm, infrared, optical, UV, and X-ray) to assess how massive stars influence surrounding gas and dust via energetic feedback.
Biographical Sketch
Laura Lopez completed her Ph.D. in astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in June 2011, working with Professors Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz, Mark Krumholz, Jason Xavier Prochaska, and Alberto Bolatto. Before going to UCSC, Lopez earned her S.B. in physics at MIT in 2004. She completed her undergraduate thesis at MIT with Dr. Herman Marshall and Professor Claude Canizares. She is originally from Barrington, Illinois.
